Boys State is about applied government, but that doesn’t mean it’s the only thing going on at Boys State! Every Boys Stater is given the opportunity to compete with the other cities in several sports during the week. Each sport names a winning city team Friday afternoon. Each day, a newspaper will also be printed. You may want to consider being an editor, writer, or layout guy! Boys State also forms a choir and band that perform at the closing ceremony Friday night. Last year, Boys Staters even got to witness a flag burning ceremony, conducted by the American Legion.
Between city meetings, senate and house gatherings, and party conventions, Boys Staters enjoy some really great speakers. Last year, Representatives Marty Seifert and Mark Kennedy even gave speeches. Col. Roger Ledding of the Minnesota State Highway Patrol was a favorite for his unique stories from his years of service. Chief Jim Way was also very well liked. Who doesn’t enjoy a live stun gun demonstration?
Other speakers in 2004 include:
Tim Pawlenty, Minnesota Governor Mary Kiffmeyer, Secretary of State Representative Mark Kennedy Honorable Paul Anderson, Associate Justin MN Supreme Court Dean Johnson, State Senator Jim Gagliardi, St. John’s Assistant Football Coach Steve Murphy, State Senator Representative Marty Seifert
